Theory
SIMULACRA/SIMULACRUM - No definable reality for anything; enhanced intertextuality
POST MODERNISM - use for highlight conventions in an ironic/critical way
WEB 3.0 - The notion that we have moved further from web 2.0 to an era where the previous consumer essentially is the producer.
POST-FEMINIST - hhh
WEB 2.0 (O'Reilly) - hhh
INTERTEXTUALITY - The relationship between two texts, for example a text referencing another with a clip or sound effect used.
CONVERGENCE (JENKINS) - Basic part of web 2.0 theory with a 2-fold meaning: the divide between industries is blurring at the same time as the gap between pro and consumer/prosumer production and editing technologies is dramatically narrowing
DIGITISATION - The Well-established but deepening process of shifting from analogue forms of media to digital forms.
DISRUPTION - Caused by digitisation, is massive changes and challenges to the traditional ways industries functioned and generated revenues especially with the shift to online distribution.
DECONSTRUCTIONISM - hhh EXAMPLE OF P.M
UGC (GILMOR, GAUNTLETT) - User Generated Content can be used as a way for industries to interact with their audiences more.
TODOROV'S 5 PART NARRATIVE STRUCTURE - Todorov's 5 part narrative structure suggests that a media text starts at an equilibrium, which is then disrupted, the characters look for a solution to the disruption, and execute the solution, which then forms a new equilibrium.
MONOMYTH/HERO'S JOURNEY - Joseph Campbell's Monomyth theory sees a media text with a 12 step process. This includes 'ordinary world', 'call to adventure', 'refusal', 'meeting with the mentor', 'crossing the threshold', 'Tests, allies, enemies', 'approach the inmost cave', 'ordeal', 'reward (seizing the sword)', 'The Road Back', 'resurrection', 'Return with elixir'.
PROPPIAN ARCHETYPE - Propp argued that every piece of media text contained a series of different archetypes, these included 'The Hero', 'The Helper', 'The Villain', 'The False Hero', 'The Donor', 'The Dispatcher', 'The Princess/Prize'. Each of these archetypes have their own responsibility within a media text.
BINARY OPPOSITION (STRAUSS) - A pair of related characters or concepts that are directly opposite.
NARRATIVE ENIGMA (BARTHES) - Unable to see the main protagonist or other characters to create mystery
SUBCULTURE P.29 (HEBDIGE) - hhh
GOODWIN'S 6 CONVENTIONS - hhh
BIG 3 CHOMSKY: CONCENTRATION OF OWNERSHIP - hhh
MALE GAZE (MULVEY) - Laura Mulvey argued that in media women are portrayed as sexual objects for male visual satisfaction
FEMALE GAZE - The binary opposition of the male gaze, suggesting that men are used in media for female visual satisfaction
SEMIOTICS - POLYSEMY/ANCHORAGE - Polysemy suggests that a media texts can be read in multiples ways. Anchorage suggests that a media text has one definite way in which it can be read.
HALL'S THEORY OF READINGS - Stuart Hall suggests there are three ways for a media to be read, through preferred reading and oppositional reading. Preferred reading is the way in which the author of the media text wants their text to be read by an audience, oppositional reading is the conscious rejection of preferred reading by the audience. Stuart Hall also argues that Negotiated reading is a compromise between preferred and oppositional, that allows the audience to have their own views whilst also agreeing with the author of the text.
BECHDEL - Bechdel invented a measure of the representation of women in media, a media text successfully passes the test if they have two or more named female characters who speak to each other about things other than men or problems surrounding men.
FINAL GIRL - The final girl is a trope in horror films, like Friday The 13th, wherein the last woman or girl alive confronts the killer, she is there to be the only one left to tell the story.
FREUDIAN PSYCHONALYSIS - hhh
VERTICAL INTEGRATION - When a conglomerate has subsidiaries operating in the same industry which cover production/distribution/exchange
HORIZONTAL INTEGRATION - When a conglomerate controls companies in different media industries which can work together to create synergy. -MCU is a good example movie/show/video game
SYNERGY - Mutually benefiting.
GLOBALISATION - The acceptance of different cultural preferences/policies/ideas in a culture or country that that culture or country are foreign to. American culture is globalised and allows a wide variety of people to respond to it. This can be exemplified through the placement of McDonalds restaurants throughout the world as well as access to American forms of media such as Social media and film/t.v.

SPOTIFY GETS SERIOUS ABOUT ITS CHARTS, LAUNCHING WEEKLY TOP 50 LISTS FOR ALBUM AND SONGS
Playing an important role in the music industry, Spotify is releasing four new charts and updating them weekly, allowing people to be more up to date on the most popular songs. They are releasing official Spotify top 50 charts as well as top 10 debut charts. These releases will see them move into the same territory ass Rolling Stone, Billboard and other reputable companies.
Technically, Spotify already offers weekly track charts for the global and US – amongst other territories – via SpotifyCharts.com, but this is the first time they’ve been packaged up as an ‘official’ Spotify Top 50.

LIST OF MUSIC VIDEOS
...
...
- 1977 to 2020
- Variation of genre (Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Hip Hop, Alternative/Indie, Pop, Rap)
- Colour scheme varies based on genre
- Less funding/older videos use performance rather than narrative
- IBTYLGOTDF - Garage Rock
- Thunderstruck - Classic Rock
- Mr Blue Sky - Pop
- Clothing varies based on genre, Rock use bleak colours, Pop uses bright colours
-
It is also made clear that the editing is heavily dependent on the genre of a music video, with editing of a rap video being much quicker, as seen with Godzilla when compared to Mr Blue Sky. A music video will also almost always be edited in time with the music, which is why rap videos tend to have quick cuts and fast paced edits.

A Journey Begins
INTRODUCTING ME
I began studying Media Studies half way through the IGCSE course and found it extremely enjoyable. I have continued to find both the practical and theoretical aspects despite challenges they have each brought. Last year I produced a film opening for the subject and found it to be interesting as there was a lot to learn that I may be able to use in a future career as an actor for film. I began enjoying media much more when it came to the practical side of it and fortunately enough our A2 group were able to begin work on a monthly national radio show a couple of years ago, which we have now been able to take live rather than pre-recorded.
I am looking forward to the production of a music video this year and am aiming to make a convincing video for my final piece of coursework. Throughout the year I am hoping to further develop many of the skills I have already started to develop in preparation for university.
I have struggled to figure out exactly what I want in my music video, however I feel as though I will be able to produce a professional looking video by the time the deadline rolls around.
THE BRIEF & POST LIST
THE BRIEF - music promotion package
A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music video (major task), together with an official social media page for the band or artist(s) and a digipak for the album's release (minor tasks).
The work may be undertaken individually or by a group (maximum group size is four candidates). Candidates must present the evidence for assessment individually, whether they have worked in a group or individually. Centres must assess candidates on an individual basis. Each candidate’s blog should clearly indicate the candidate’s own role in any group activity to allow the teacher to assess the contribution of each individual within the group.
